Thunderstorm & Lightning Sensor
Passive thunderstorm and lightning detection sensor providing reliable strike range and bearing information for AWOS, airport and aviation weather monitoring systems.
Typical Applications
- Automated Weather Observing Systems (AWOS)
- Airport thunderstorm monitoring
- Aviation lightning detection
- Airfield weather safety systems
- Lightning range and bearing monitoring
- Meteorological warning networks
The Thunderstorm & Lightning Sensor provides reliable detection and location of electrical discharges associated with thunderstorms for airport and aviation weather monitoring. Using a passive crossed-loop and sense antenna, the system detects electromagnetic signatures from lightning events, filters non-atmospheric interference and processes strike information into range and bearing data for integration with Automated Weather Observing Systems (AWOS) and standalone monitoring installations.
Key Features
- Passive thunderstorm and lightning detection
- Detects electrical discharges over long distances
- No harmful signal transmission
- Lightning range and bearing determination
- Crossed-loop and sense antenna technology
- Noise filtering for improved detection reliability
- Built-in processing and strike-data storage
- Standalone and AWOS-connected configurations
- FAA-certified aviation weather sensor
The processor analyzes lightning strikes into distance and direction information, allowing airport weather systems to distinguish nearby, vicinity and distant lightning conditions rather than simply reporting that a strike occurred.
